recent report by Australia’s Oral Health Tracker has found that only half of all Australian adults brush their teeth twice per day. This alarming statistic would be one of the root causes in another concerning number – more than 90 per cent of adults have decay or have had decay in their permanent teeth. There are a number of factors that lead to tooth decay in adults but overall, poor oral hygiene is the main concern and brushing twice daily should be a part of everyone’s daily routine. Here are top 5 reasons for tooth loss in adults.

The report found that alcohol consumption and smoking are main contributors to the poor oral health of many Australians. These high numbers are leading to a high rate of tooth loss among adults with 15.5 per cent of adults having severe tooth loss – meaning they had less than 21 teeth out of a full set of 32.

Poor Nutrition

Foods that are high in carbohydrates, high in sugar and high in acid are all putting your teeth at risk of decay. These foods are bad for your teeth as they promote the growth of bacteria in your teeth, particularly if you don’t rinse your mouth after eating. 

Tooth Grinding

By grinding your teeth together, the enamel is stripped which wears them down, making them prone to decay. Many people grind their teeth in their sleep without even knowing so it is important to maintain regular check ups to check your teeth are nice and healthy. 

Sugary Foods

Sugary foods are more than just lollies and chocolates – there are so many foods that have hidden sugars even when they appear to be healthy. Sugar is known to be bad for teeth as the bacteria in your mouth feed of of sugary foods which can easily become stuck between teeth and in tooth crevices. Always make sure you brush your teeth after eating foods that are high in sugars – if you can’t do that, rinse your mouth with some water.

Dehydration

Having a dry mouth makes your teeth more prone to plaque growing which can lead to tooth decay. Having a dry mouth can be caused by a number of things but the easiest way to prevent this is by staying well hydrated and always sipping on water throughout the day.

Missing Check-Up Appointments

The best way to stay on top of any tooth decay is by having regular appointments with your dentist every 6 months. This way, if there is ever any decay, it will only be minimal and will be much easier to treat than if you leave it untreated.
