Teeth whitening is a safe and fast way to enhance the appearance of your smile.

Many of us struggle with stains and discolouration on the surface of our teeth, but the good news is that these issues can be effectively resolved with professional whitening treatments. Teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments thanks to its ability to brighten one’s smile so considerably. But are these treatments safe? While there are some potential side effects, the teeth whitening process is completely safe. Read on to find out how it works and what you can expect from the treatment…

What are the possible side effects?

Although teeth whitening is considered safe when performed by a fully qualified professional, some potential side effects can occur. You may notice that your teeth feel more sensitive than usual following treatment, especially after the first or second time that you go through the process. With time, this side effect should subside. If you are struggling, chat to your dentist about the issue as they may be able to recommend a product that is formulated to alleviate sensitivity.

Another possible side-effect of the whitening process is irritating gums. This issue, however, only occurs when the whitening product comes into contact with the gums and your dentist will work carefully to ensure that this does not happen.

Is teeth whitening safe for everyone?

Although teeth whitening is suitable and safe for most patients, we do recommend that pregnant women wait until after the birth of their baby to undergo treatment. There is very little data to suggest whether or not whitening ingredients are safe for unborn babies and pregnant women, so it is better to avoid the risk altogether. If you are pregnant, we encourage you to practice good oral hygiene and schedule an appointment to see us a few months after your baby has been born.

What are the options?

If you would like to brighten the appearance of your teeth, there are many methods to choose from. The type of treatment that you choose will depend on the type of stains and discolouration that are affecting your teeth, your dental history, your particular budget, and your personal aesthetic goals.

If you’re not sure what kind of treatment suits you best, it’s advisable to speak to your dentist for more information. Your dentist will be able to recommend a treatment that addresses your particular concerns and enhances the overall appearance of your smile.

The professional treatments on offer include in-office whitening and take-home whitening kits. In-office whitening involves the application of hydrogen peroxide to the teeth, as well as the use of a light that speeds up the whitening process. Take-home whitening treatments, on the other hand, involve the use of custom-made trays in which you place a whitening gel. These trays fit your teeth comfortably and should be worn at home for a time recommended by your dentist. Because the custom trays are made based on a mould of your teeth, they help to whiten the teeth very precisely without letting the bleach solution touch your gums.

How can we help?

At Malo Dental, we offer both in-chair and take-home whitening treatments. Our in-chair treatments deliver fast results, up to 10 shades whiter, in less than an hour; while our take-home kits are ideal for those who are looking for a flexible method of whitening their teeth. Take-home kits don’t achieve results as quickly as in-chair treatments, but are also an effective option.

When it comes to choosing the right shade for your teeth, our dental team uses the vita classic shade guidelines as a reference. This allows us to help you find a shade that suits your complexion and achieve a natural-looking result.
